Feeling sick, hug a dog!

September 17, 2009

What a week this has been!  After feeling ill all last week, I finally went to the doctor on Monday only to learn that yes, I am sick….with bronchitis.  So I took the doctor’s advice, rest!  Considering that I had zero energy to do anything, the gym was the last thing on my mind and sleep was priority.  With out luring, or calling her name, the best medicine came to my aid; Toula.

I came home from the doctor and the need for sleep took over. Toula, the dog that never sleeps on the bed, jumped up on the bed in feather like fashion, not to disturb me, just simply to curl up by me and sleep.   She did this not just one day, but several as I recouped.  Even though the other dogs were happily playing in the lake with their balls and having a good time, Toula decided that it was far more rewarding to help me feel better.  And frankly, she did.  Just having her there was good energy, good medicine and a good way to make sure I followed doctor’s orders.

Dogs are amazing companions, and they seem to know exactly when to make you feel special and comfort you when it is needed most. I’m so fortunate to have my girl Toula!

Come see Toula perform as she helps raise food donations for the PET PANTRY OF MICHIGAN.  http://www.petpantrymi.org/events.html

On Friday, September 18, 2009, Toula and I will be at the Canary Inn, 506 Center Street, North Muskegon, Michigan, taking the stage at 4:30.  The festivities will take place from 3-6pm.

The purpose of this event is to help local dogs and your pet food donation will make that possible. This is a family event and a great way to spend a few hours.

The Pet Pantry is an organization that is dedicated to helping low income families with pet food and supplies.  Toula and I are dedicated to help fight hunger and keeping pets with their families.  Please show your support and come out and have fun!

Fun in the Sun!

Yesterday, I decided the dogs and I needed a few hours of relaxing and fun!  So I did what every dog owner in my situation would do: I invited my dogs’ friends and owner over for some lake fun!

It was a warm sunny day and the conditions were perfect for beach fun and a boat ride with the dogs.  In total, we had seven dogs on the boat. Every one of the seven dogs is a rescue dog!  Each one has their own level of enjoyment when it comes to water, or lack there of!

The biggest highlight of the day came from Sasha, the white, perky eared, smallest of Border collies on the excursion.  Sasha is a special girl, and not so much because she is deaf, but because of her pure enjoyment of life and perpetual smile.  And most importantly, this is a dog that less than two years ago would have been the instigator of severe dog fights and would not have been able to enjoy the day off lead with the rest of the pack.   Today, however, she is a happy well adjusted dog and loves the company of her dog friends. And her owner couldn’t be happier for Sasha!

Perhaps Sasha’s new lease on life is what prompted her to take part in the joy of being part of the pack, or maybe it was peer pressure from her dog friends.  Either way, this 7 year old girl swam for the first time in her life!  On her own, she walked through the water and when the ball was thrown, and the other dogs swam after it, Sasha couldn’t resist, she was off and swimming.  I must say, she swam like a pro and seemed to be very pound of the new hobby.

A special thanks to Toula, Cole, Max, Keegan, Annie and Jake for making Sasha’s day a special one and for the wonderful memories I will carry of our day of Fun in the Sun!  And for Sasha’s owners, I’m sure they are still in awe over Sasha swimming!
