Hotel forDogs- adopt a rescue!

January 19, 2009

I went to see Hotel for Dogs this weekend and have to say that it was a great movie.  For anyone that has a rescue dog or loves dogs in general, you will enjoy the movie.  The dog actors did a great job, none of which would have been possible without the skilled set trainers that worked with the dogs.  The dogs’ personalities and uniqueness’ brought the world of rescue dogs to life.

I’m involved in rescue and foster dogs in my home, and sadly enough, each dog’s predicament that landed them at the “Hotel” is one that I’ve personally experienced while running my own little “Hotel.”   Every rescue dog has a story and past, even if their past is unknown.  For me, when I foster a rescue dog, it is not about focusing on the dog’s past, but moving forward and introducing the dog to “new” life, new behaviors and their ability to have a healthy bond with a human.

I am happy to see the media attention generated from Hotel for Dogs and that it is bringing about awareness of rescue dogs.  As the proud owner of rescue dogs, I encourage anyone who is considering getting a dog to open their home and heart to a rescue; it will change your life.

Baby its cold outside!

January 15, 2009

Baby its cold outside and don’t our dogs know it upon making the trip outside to potty!

The recent low temperatures are something that all dog owners need to be aware of and we need to make responsible decisions for our dogs: Limit your dog’s time outside in the freezing elements and make sure that even when inside, your dogs have fresh water.

Although my dogs, Toula and Cole, love to go outside and play, it is times like this where I have to keep a close eye on them and limit their time outside. In this freezing weather, most dogs go outside and can’t wait to come back in to the warmth of a cozy house. Toula and Cole are not most dogs! You have to understand; Toula loves the crisp cold snow falling around her and becomes unaware of the freezing temperatures, especially if there is a jolly ball in her vicinity. Cole must herd Toula and wouldn’t dream of missing out on a game of jolly ball with his sister. Meanwhile, Keegan and Annie are curled up in their warm beds surely dreaming of two crazy border collies that enjoy the insanely cold weather.

For now, our outdoor activities are limited to potty and maybe a few good ball throws, which is minimal and barely counts as exercise so the exercise, must come in a different form. Therefore, this is the perfect time to build on obedience and learn a few new tricks…inside a warm house.
